John Mocioi Obituary

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of John Mocioi, who peacefully departed this world on April 9th, 2026 after a long and well fought battle with lung cancer.

He was true to himself until the very end, passionate and resilient even in facing the unknown.

Born on April 6th, 1958 in Cetatea de Balta, Romania, he grew up as the youngest of five siblings.

He had forged his own path from a young age, and it was his headstrong determination that granted him the strength to leave his Communist home country and begin his voyage to the US.

After a long and treacherous escape across the Romanian border and inhabiting multiple refugee camps, the last leg of his journey was assisted by an Orthodox church that granted him sponsorship.

On November 13th, 1977, he finally arrived in New York City.

John taught himself English through television and music, and gained further proficiency during his time as a dishwasher and eventual cook in multiple diners.

He moved on to become an automechanic in Rhinebeck before joining a metal fabrication business in the 1980’s, soon becoming the foreman of the company. Moving to another business after the closure of the first, John continued to hone the craft of metal fabrication, becoming exceptionally skilled and detail-oriented in his work.

He eventually went on to open his own business, specializing in metal roofs as well as fixtures like sinks, countertops, custom railings, and much more.

Through working with copper, zinc, stainless steel, and bronze, John was able to express his creative side in fabricating intricate tables and sculptures, often including found materials such as wagon wheels and old car parts.

Many of his pieces were featured in craft shows that he did alongside his wife, Tracey.

One of his largest creative endeavours was the fabrication of a six foot tall Justinian Cross out of copper and stainless steel to adorn the top of the newly built sanctuary of The Greek Orthodox Church of the Hamptons.

He was an innovator, meeting every challenge head on and finding creative solutions to even the toughest problems.

If there was a task that had you stumped – you took it to John.

Outside of metal fabrication, he was an avid music enjoyer with a collection of CD’s spanning all genres. He and Tracey traveled to many local venues to see live bands, and you could often find the pair dancing the night away.

He had a passion for sports bikes – Ducatis in particular – as well as older cars and Formula One racing.

Above all else, John valued the family he had built. He and Tracey married in 2007, and their creative spirits soared as one in their many ventures. He was also a great stepfather and mentor to Tracey’s child, London, and the two shared many interests and philosophical talks over the years.

He will be missed far more than words can describe.

Odihnească-se în pace.
