Obituary of John Vincent Sweeney

John Vincent Sweeney, 95, of Kingston, died March 25, 2014 at HealthAlliance Hospital, Broadway Campus after a period of declining health. John was born in Saugerties on December 29, 1918 to Joseph Sweeney and Eleanor Ball Sweeney. He graduated from, St. Mary of the Snow School and Saugerties High School. In 1941 he married Helen F. Buboltz. In November of 2013, they celebrated their 72nd Anniversary. John served in the United States Army during World War II. He was stationed in the Philippine Islands as 1st Sergeant in the 164th Anti-aircraft Gun Battalion and was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Service Good Conduct Medal, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. A long-time faithful member of the Immaculate Conception Parish, John ushered for 63 years and spent many volunteer hours working on the church bazaar and bingo. He was a member and past president of the Holy Name Society and also belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and the White Eagle Benevolent Society, where after his retirement from Miron Lumber (formerly Island Dock). he happily tended bar until his 90th birthday. John was also an avid trout fisherman, golfer and bowler, who took great pride in having bowled a 299 game. Besides his wife, he is survived by four daughters: Patricia Neher and her husband George, Jane Todd and her husband Ward, Kathleen Kiernan and her husband Donald and Susan Newell and her husband Donald. Also surviving are fourteen grandchildren: Christopher (Kim) Neher, George Neher, Jr,.Jennifer (Stephen) Murphy, Peter (Courtney) Tavares, Michael Todd, Phillipe (Keren) Knab, Jeffrey Boomhower, Daniel Kiernan, Patrick Kiernan, Kristopher Kiernan, Lori Wenzel, Kari Wenzel, George Newell, Nicholas Newell and fourteen great-grandchildren. John was predeceased by his sister, Theresa Peters; five brothers, Arthur, Robert, Edward, Phillip and Richard Sweeney; two grandchildren, Kory Jane and John Vincent Boomhower. Friends and relatives will be received Friday from 5-8pm at the Henry J. Bruck Funeral Home. 261 Broadway, Kingston. Funeral procession will form 9:45am at the funeral home on Saturday thence proceed to the Immaculate Conception Church where at 10:30 am a Mass of Christian Burial will be sung. Burial to follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery with full miiltiary honors by Joyce Schirick VFW Post 1386 Color Guard.
