Obituary of John J. Hoban
John (Jack) Hoban, 89, of Harding Avenue, passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family, Tuesday evening, October 15, 2024. He lived his whole life in the family home his father built. Jack was a devoted son to his mother, Rhea Hoban and his father Richard Hoban.
He was a graduate of Kingston High School and went on to attend New York State Merchant Marine Academy at Fort Schuyler in the Bronx. Jack spent his work career as a chief engineer on trans-oceanic oil tankers traveling the world. After retirement, Jack kept constantly busy by using his resourcefulness and mechanical abilities with home improvement projects both for himself and others. Jack was also known for the meticulous care he took in maintaining his property, including his beloved lawn, which was the envy of every homeowner in Roosevelt Park besides being known as a good neighbor. Jack was an avid golfer and long time member of Twaalfskill Golf Club, where in addition to his many hours out on the course, he also enjoyed the camaraderie and friendship of his fellow golfers.
Jack was a devoted family man, brother to Joyce (Hoban) Hobart, Donald Hoban and his wife Arlene, and sister-in-law Donna Hoban. He was predeceased by his parents, Richard J. Hoban and Rhea (Carter) Hoban; brothers, Richard Hoban and Robert Hoban; sister-in-law Evelyn (Sandy) Hoban and brother-in-law, Donald Hobart. In addition, Jack was extremely close to his twelve nieces and nephews: Lynda Mancini (David), Diane Gregory (Stephen), Richard (deceased), Deborah Donnelly (Bob), Denise Hoban-Weeks (Don), Joni Hobart-Adin (Alan), David Hobart. Alan Hobart (Cheryl), Steven Hobart (Michelle Cook), Patti Marsh (Brad), Keith Hoban (Karen), and Kevin Hoban (Laurie), plus many many great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews. In addition to his family, he cultivated many close friendships which he highly valued and were very important to him.
The family would also like to give a most heartfelt thanks to his two caregivers, Amelia and Karen who provided the highest quality of love and care to Jack in his final days. Jack was a hell of a guy and will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.
Visitation will be held at the Henry J. Bruck Funeral Home, 261 Broadway, Kingston, NY on Thursday, October 17, 2024 from 4 pm - 7 pm. Funeral procession will form at the funeral home on Friday, October 18, 2024 at 10:00 am then proceed to St. Joseph’s Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be sung at 11:00 am. Burial to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
